HATIGAON an urban settlement of elephants and Mahouts
By Sanjeev Vidyarthi and Megha Bhatnagar
With a reflective essay by Rahul Mehrotra
This monograph illustrates the conception, planning, and building of a unique settlement named Hāthigaon, or Elephant village, designed for working elephants and their caretaking families in the dry and arid city of Jaipur.
This book will explore the development of Hāthigaon: The overall planning approach including project conception and design development centered upon elephant comfort and meaningful animal-human interaction by focusing upon two key questions.
The author’s purpose is not only to draw out practical insights—that designers working in similar developing contexts may find useful worldwide—but also to examine how settlement planning befitting 21st century design sensibilities might look like in the emergent urban landscape of India and south Asia more broadly?
