Description
Shaping the future of design, this monograph explores the visionary work of Nudes, the award-winning Mumbai-based studio founded by architect Nuru Karim. Through a diverse range of projects, from small-scale pavilions to large infrastructure, Nudes reimagines architecture as a catalyst for a more adaptive, regenerative, and connected world, inspiring new possibilities for a sustainable future.
About the authors
Nuru Karim is the Founder and Principal of Nudes, an award-winning design studio that uses advanced technologies to address social and environmental challenges through innovative, sustainability-driven architecture. He holds a Master’s in Architecture and Urbanism from the Architectural Association, London (2006), and has studied in London, Mumbai (KRVIA, gold medallist, 1997), Montreal (McGill, 1995), HarvardX (2020), and Massey’s Business School, New Zealand (2024).
In 2021, he was selected as one of 200 global visionaries to collaborate with Louis Vuitton for the founder’s 200th anniversary— the only Indian chosen. Louis Vuitton honoured the visionaries with a €10,000 donation each to non-profits supporting arts and creativity for underprivileged youth.
Karim previously worked with Sen Kapadia Architect (1997–2000) and Zaha Hadid Architects (2005), contributing to major institutional projects. At Nudes, he leads a practice known for socially conscious, digitally driven design, with work recognised through multiple awards and a nomination for the Aga Khan Award for Architecture (2013).
In a 2019 TEDx talk, he explored how architecture can learn from social insects to develop sustainable, adaptive, and efficient building practices. His work continues to champion environmental responsibility and the role of architecture in driving social change.
Readers reviews
“What is perhaps most commendable is Karim’s insistence on architecture’s civic mission. His projects operate across scales and typologies, always enriching the public realm. Whether crafting schools, housing, parks, or transport hubs, Karim ensures that his parametric articulations serve a humanist agenda.
In celebrating Nuru Karim and his studio, we are reminded that the future of architecture lies in those who dare to think computationally, act ecologically, and design poetically. This book is both testament and provocation.”
