UKD – UTTARAKHAND HIMALAYAS I

by Sriparna Saha and Dhenesh Raj

Uttarakhand is frequently referred to as Dev Bhumi- Land of Gods. However, this deluge of devotion often eclipses the rich architectural heritage of the region- be it the 1000 year old seismic resistant multistorey fortress homes (pherols) dotting the hillsides , the traditional longhouses (bakhlis) located in a linear manner on the sunlit terraces, the wood stone temples off Lord Mahasu adorned with intricate wooden carvings,  the remnants of caravansarais tucked into the hillsides along the connectors to the Silk Route…the list can go on and on.

The guide book aims to showcase some of lesser known architectural masterpieces of the region along with the more prominent and better known  buildings of the popular hill stations of Mussoorie and Nainital and those located within the tri cities of Dehradun, Rishikesh and Haridwar.
