by Teresa Garreta
Varanasi or Kashi, located on the west bank of the river Ganga, is the spiritual capital of India and the holiest of the seven sacred cities in Hinduism and Jainism. The city has grown along the arc of the Ganga, as a focal point; the riverfront is packed with temples side by side in different architectural styles and ghats. The old city extends about 2 km back from the river and is a maze of alleyways and streets, temples, mosques, ashrams and shops. In this guide, you will also find also information on Sarnath, located 13 km of Varanasi. Where Buddha first taught and where the Buddhism came into existence.
